Council Meeting Decisions
Ordinary Council Meeting – 16 April 2025
The following is a summary of resolutions passed by the Koorda Shire Council at the Ordinary Council Meeting held on 16 April 2025, commencing at 5pm. Full Council meeting minutes and agendas can be viewed on the shire’s website at Past Council Meetings » Shire of Koorda
Presentation to the Council Meeting
NEWTRAVEL officer Linda Vernon made a presentation to Council on the success of the organisation’s initiatives, particularly the Wheatbelt Way, in attracting more than 15,000 visitors to the region over the past year. As part of her presentation, Ms Vernon provided a summary on the history of NEWTRAVEL and outlined future plans including a proposed Memorandum of Understanding with the shire for greater funding certainty.
Announcements by Shire President Jannah Stratford
The shire president expressed condolences to the Inman family for the passing of Mr Don Inman who was a shire councillor from 1981 to 1993 and shire president from 1986 to 1992. Cr Stratford also offered condolences to the Luers family for the passing of Mr Bruno Luers who was a JP, former business owner and active community volunteer for many years. The president also welcomed recent works to resurface the truck bays adjacent to Railway Street and thanked staff.
Corporate and Community
Council received the shire’s Monthly Financial Statements and List of Accounts Paid. Council also endorsed the proposed timetable for the development of the Shire of Koorda 2025-26 annual budget with a completion schedule to meet the statutory 31 August deadline. Council also approved development of the MoU between the Shire and NEWTRAVEL.
Governance and Compliance
Council approved the use of the common seal on the Caravan Park Local Law to be submitted to the departmental Director General. A public submission period, for which the community can offer submissions or comments on the proposed new local law is currently open until 8 May.
The addition of two more properties to be seized by the shire as part of the program to recover long-term non-payment of rates has been endorsed by Council. Property Seizure and Sale Orders will now be sought on the properties at 27 Smith Street and 51 Smith Street. These properties are in addition to two other properties – 1 Allenby Street and 23 Smith Street – which the shire is currently advertising to be sold to recover overdue rates.
Works and Asset
Council endorsed works to convert the cul-de-sac at the end of Thomas Street to a through road as a second entrance to the Koorda Sports Club car park. Access to the car park via an informal side entrance to the cul-de-sac was recently closed following a safety complaint to the shire. The cul-de-sac and side entrance will now be removed to enable direct access to the car park with the inclusion of speed control measures on the approach from Thomas Street. The cul-de-sac was previously created to address safety issues regarding a playground in the car park at the time. As the playground no longer exists, the need for the cul-de-sac to restrict access is redundant.
Meeting closed at 5.41pm
